Either 'One Foot in Adelaide' or 'Reach for the Sky'.

Monday 9th January 2017 - to Glenelg, Adelaide

I wasn't going to mention anything about the unseemly incident that occurred last night but I feel I must  because the same happened again this morning.  Janice is usually well behaved and can be trusted in most social circumstances but this is a worrying development and may be reflected in my final tripadvisor review at the end of the holiday.  What has she been up to, I hear you cry?  Well, last night she walked straight into our neighbours room without warning.  She feigned embarrassment and I put it down to a lack of spatial awareness but, low and behold, she did exactly the same again this morning.  More embarrassment and sincere apologies to the man in his bath robe.  We checked out of the hotel as quick as possible before a complaint of peeping could be made!!!

After the tyre screeching as we left the car park we settled down to the 3-4 hour drive to the last night destination on our Ocean Road trip to Adelaide.

After our free ferry ride across the Murray River our lunchtime stop was at the 'beautiful' town of Strathalbyn, well that's what the guide book said.  It was actually a very pretty old town with old railway station and nice park and church.  The shops looked a good mix and quality for the size of town.

The Murray on the Murray!

The park at Strathalbyn.

On our drive into Adelaide we were on a long straight road with a cycle path along the edge.  We repeatedly had to stop and start at traffic lights and repeatedly we were passed and then overtook the same group of five cyclists.  I was the passenger at this stage.  We first noticed them when they went through a red traffic light!  They were wearing the same lycra kit with a light blue stripe vertically on it and they all had Pinerello cycles.  It dawned on me that they were a cycling team and could be here for the Tour Down a Under that starts on 17th January.  Then it struck me that it was a Sky Cycle Team kit and bike.  Next time they passed I saw that one was Geraint Thomas.  How amazing is that.  We stopped ahead of them and I took a photo and shouted encouragement.  I got a wave back as they passed. It's made my day.  We will possibly see the first day of the race as we fly out of Adelaide back to Melbourne on the evening of that day, hopefully, we will see some of the race.

Having 'reached for the Sky' we arrived at out posh hotel at Glenelg.  It is the Stamford Grand.

It's right next to the beach.  Whilst checking in I was told that because I booked on an external website I couldn't have free wifi in the room, only in the lobby!  I immediately complained vociferously.  I was told it couldn't be changed and I couldn't get a free password and if I wanted wifi it would cost 24 dollars for 24 hours.  That made me even worse.  I complained that I was a second class customer and it spoiled a quality hotel especially when every other place we have stayed in Australia had free wifi.  It didn't get me anywhere.  I'm still not happy that bigger hotels sometimes try and rip people off for basic facilities.  I should have asked for a room upgrade.  Our room was fine...but not a sea view.  I'll give the hotel some grief in the review.  I was a real Victor Meldrew in 'One Foot in the Grave' except my foot was in Adelaide.

We spent the afternoon on the beach immediately outside the hotel.

Not too bad at all!

We went out for a pre-meal beer in a bar on the corner.  I was given plastic glasses.  I asked for real glasses and was told they were short of real glasses and the ones they had available were for a different brand of beer!  I was back into Victor mode.  I kicked up a fuss and got the 'wrong glasses' for the beer I ordered.  This brings me onto the topic of beer glass sizes.  I think I previously mentioned that Aussie glass sizes were different with Pints, Pots and Schooners all meaning something different.  Well, it's different again in South Australia.  In the rest of Oz a Schooner seems to be around 500cl but in SA it is less than a half pint, a Pint is 420cl and an Imperial is what we call a Pint???  Some places don't even do an Imperial?  It makes no sense at all.

Despite all this rambling we have had a great day.  I even enjoyed the complaining.  The weather started poor but the afternoon and evening have been brilliant.

Here's the Town Hall at Glenelg.

Sunset over the beach.

Tomorrow we hand the car back and get picked up by Cousin Jack. Looking forward very much to seeing him and his wife Jill.
