It's a big day today....my brother Peter is 50. David and I have been waiting for him to catch us up into the 5th decade. Happy Birthday Peter! I think I sent him a birthday email before he actually became 50 because of the time difference.
We had a great breakfast at the Colhurst B&B in Mount Gambier. It was the full monty, fruit juice, cereals, fruit salad, homemade granola and yoghurt, bacon, egg on toasted muffins, tomato and mushrooms, followed by jam and toast. It was all tasty and lovely.
We walked again into town to check out the things we had seen in the dark the previous night.
We had seen these signs in the town and it made us wonder if it was ok to carry dangerous goods before we passed the signs?
The Blue Lake that we saw at sunset last night was actually very blue!
It is blue from November to April and grey for the rest of the year. Scientists seem to be unsure why. They suggest it may be calcium carbonate crystals in the water that create the blueness when it warms a little in the summer? Other suggestions would be welcome.
We drove onto Robe to get some beach time. It was very hot again but partially cloudy.
This is one of the beaches at Robe. The town seems nice and a bit touristy. There is a harbour and several beaches and camp sites. We have certainly seen nothing to be disrespectful about in Robe. The town is named after the fourth Governor of South Australia and was a significant post in the 1800's. Many Chinese people entered Australia by the port to avoid immigration taxes in Victoria during the Gold Rush. The Chinese people walked over 200 miles to Ballarat and Bendigo in Victoria to get to the gold.
We checked into the motel we are staying in for two nights. It is perfectly nice but fairly standard as far as motels go. It has everything we need. We quickly set off to Long Beach and had a bit of a relax and a few swims.
In the evening we had a barbie at the motel and tested the Coonawarra wine. We thought this one was inky and pencil shavings with overtones of boysenberry. It was lovely.
We walked in the evening and sat on some rocks by a small beach......idyllic!
